its a genetic tug of war between the genes in the egg and the genes in the sperm.  the egg is not sex determining at all, and the sperm can have either an X or a Y chromosome.
in the theory described in the article, sometimes genes from the sperm are activated, or shut down, and sometimes genes from the egg are activated, or shut down, and an inbalance of this on particular genes can cause mental illness.</description>
